Beer Bottle Says 'Be Careful with Beer'

Jacob Halstead

This code was found on the back of a bottle of Italian beer. I was hoping for some fun, playful content, and to learn about the brand, such as their history and brewing methods. Nope...check it out for yourself!

There was no CTA for the QR code. It was small with no accompanying text. It is on the back of a bottle of beer for the brand Birra Messina.

QR Code & Links

QR Code Observations
  • Uses a QR redirect service that keeps the URL short, and load quickly.
  • On landing page, privacy policy takes over the entire page. It is not possible to see anything on the page, to see if you are even on the correct page.
  • After clearing the privacy, there is an age gate that is a simple selector.
  • The final content is just a warning about danger of alcohol. There is no other links or options. There is a phone number to call and report...something.
  • Functionality, the QR code is correct. Setting up a QR code on a curved surface is not easy, and the simple QR code allows this to happen. The complete takeover by the privacy policy is not necessary, since it it clear they are not doing anything the website. And the final content is a total miss for the brand. Going through the printing costs to include a QR code, and then not offering anything is a bad experience.
  • The final page had no option to sign up for email, which is a always a major miss.

1 - cookie challenge
1 Landing page with wall of privacy text
2 - age gate
2 Age gate. Simple Yes/No question
3 - final content
3 Content is only a warning page.

Recommendations

  • Minimize the privacy policy text. Better yet, don't collect any user data and have page perform as an easy to use entrance and age gate.
  • For the main content, a complete burn to the ground and rebuild needed. It's good they have content about drinking responsibly, but there needs to be a lot more here to support the brand and educate the consumer. Bare minimum, their brew method and history, and contribution to Italian culture.
  • Every landing page needs to offer the consumer a way to stay in contact with the brand. A form for an email subscribe is always a necessity.
